Accountants can work for a small shop, large corporation, school system, non-profit organization, restaurant, service, or more. Each company or organization comes with different job duties ranging from simple book balancing to lengthy financial reports and forecasts. Accountants start their careers with basic accounting classes learning the difference between credits and debits and making general ledger entries and then follow a four year college program to gain a degree.

An accountant begins his or her day tallying up the previous day's sales and ensuring that the monetary deposits match. Information is entered into the computer and items are double or triple checked to make sure records are up to date and correct. Accountants often handle weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly payroll, year end taxes, and audits.

It is also important for accountants to work closely with other staff to ensure they know the general billing policies to prevent errors from occurring. Office hours for an accountant are generally 9 to 5, but overtime can be a necessity in busy seasons, especially come tax time. Providing a perspective accountant enjoys math and is ready to put in the extra hours as required, accounting is a lucrative and enjoyable career.
